LA-ICP-MS

Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful analytical technology that enables highly sensitive elemental and isotopic analysis to be performed directly on solid samples. A focused laser beam hits the sample surface and generate fine particles. The ablated material rapidly transported to the plasma tourch of the ICP-MS instrument for digestion and ionization of the sampled mass. The excited ions are then accelerated and separated by a double-focusing magnet and finally introduced to the ion-counter detector of the mass spectrometer. Suitable for U-Th-Pb geochronology and trace-element analyses in solid materials.
